How Personalised Care Helped Simon Thrive

A New Beginning at Rowanbrook

When Simon moved into Rowanbrook Care Home as its very first resident, it marked both a milestone for the home and a new beginning for him. Living with advanced dementia and limited verbal communication, Simon needed a calm, understanding environment where his individuality could be recognised and his wellbeing nurtured.

Creating a Personalised Care Plan

From his very first day, the Rowanbrook team worked closely with Simon and his family to create a personalised care plan that reflected who he is, including his preferences, his routines and his goal of being closer to his loved ones in Walsall. “Simon’s mother, Susan, was involved from the very start,” said Manager Bo. “Her insight was invaluable in helping us understand Simon’s personality and the best ways to support him.”

A Positive Move Towards Better Care

Before joining Rowanbrook, Simon had been living in a care home that struggled to meet his complex needs. Communication was difficult and his family could see that he wasn’t receiving the level of tailored support he required. The move to Rowanbrook offered a chance for change and the results have been remarkable.

A Noticeable Transformation

Since his arrival, Simon has grown visibly happier, healthier and more active. He now laughs, dances and enjoys daily interactions with the team. He has gained weight, improved his independence and responds positively to the calm, structured environment around him. “He’s so much more engaged and content,” said Susan. “All the staff go above and beyond to make sure his needs are met. I feel so much better knowing he’s getting the care he deserves in such a respectful and caring place.”

A Multidisciplinary Approach to Care

Simon’s progress is the result of Rowanbrook’s multidisciplinary approach to care, bringing together general and mental health nurses, dementia care specialists, activities staff and dementia expert Deena Heaney MBE. This teamwork ensures every resident receives holistic, person-centred care that promotes both independence and connection.

Supporting Individual Needs with Compassion

“This collaborative approach allows us to build a complete picture of each person,” Bo explained. “With Simon, our focus has been on supporting him as an adult with unique abilities and needs, while providing the stability and encouragement that help him thrive.”

Building a Life of Routine and Connection

Now settled and close to his family, Simon enjoys a routine filled with meaningful activities, from time in the garden to spending quality moments with loved ones. His journey symbolises what Rowanbrook stands for, a home that blends expertise with empathy, creating an environment where residents can rediscover joy and independence, one day at a time.

“Simon will always be a special part of Rowanbrook’s story,” Bo said. “He was our first resident and watching his progress has reminded us exactly why we do what we do, which is to help every person live a life filled with dignity, purpose and happiness.”
