The Comfort That Comes on Four Paws .

At Rowanbrook, we believe in creating a joyful and comforting environment, and our newest team members are making a huge difference, with wagging tails and wet noses! Our new Activities Coordinator, Darren, has introduced a wonderful animal program, bringing his two friendly Labradors, Freya and Scout, into the home regularly. The impact on our residents has been nothing short of amazing; they absolutely adore them.

Freya, an English Labrador, and Scout, an American Labrador, are no strangers to care home life, having grown up in these environments. Scout visits for a few mornings each week, while Freya joins us in the afternoons, bringing smiles and companionship wherever they go. Residents love to stroke them, play catch with their toys, and watch as they perform well-trained tricks for a few treats. This simple act of connection provides comfort and a sense of routine, which is especially beneficial for residents with dementia and complex mental health needs.

Research has shown that time spent with animals can help reduce stress, improve mood and even lower blood pressure. For those living with dementia, therapy animals can help ease anxiety, promote interaction and provide a reassuring sense of connection.

Beyond the happiness they bring, the presence of Freya and Scout is part of a considered and evidence-based activities program. As well-trained Scentwork and Mantrailing dogs, their calming influence is well-known and scientifically proven to improve well-being. Darren’s impressive list of dog training qualifications, from Certified Dog Trainer to Companion Obedience Specialist, ensures that the program is not only delightful but also professionally managed. Everyone at Rowanbrook, including our dedicated staff, enjoys having these furry friends in the home, contributing to the strong sense of community and care we are so proud of.

Darren, Activities Coordinator says, “I’ve always believed in the powerful connection between animals and people. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the immediate and positive impact that our dogs have on the residents; it’s truly wonderful to witness.”

Bo Micu, Home Manager added, “The introduction of these visits is a wonderful addition to our regular activities and engagements, further enhancing our residents’ wellbeing. You can see the positive impact instantly, with residents relaxing and their faces lighting up with smiles.”
